What is the Category C Module?

The Category C Module is a self-paced online course designed for individuals involved in the care and welfare of animals used in scientific research.

Under EU Directive 2010/63/EU (enabled in Ireland by SI 543/12), there are four categories of personnel working with animals in research:

This module provides the mandatory training required for Category C personnel, covering the legal, ethical, and practical foundations necessary to ensure the highest standards of animal welfare in research settings.

Course Structure

This is a fully online, self-directed course. Students work through the modules in sequential order at their own pace. Course content is delivered through our Moodle platform and other additional sources. An assessment is completed at the end of the course.
