How Certification Works

To legally work with animals in scientific procedures in Ireland, individuals must complete accredited training that meets both national and EU requirements. LAST Ireland provides that pathway, structured around three core stages.

This training is recognised by the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) and satisfies the formal education required under EU Directive 2010/63/EU for applying for Individual Authorisation.

Build Your Ethical and Legal Foundation

Start with a live cohort course covering animal welfare science, the 3Rs, legal responsibilities, and humane practices. Completion is required before advancing.

Train for the Species You Work With

Self-paced, online modules that focus on species-specific handling, care, and procedures. Choose from Rodent, Aquatic, Dog & Cat, and more.

Receive Your Accredited Certification

Once both modules are complete, you'll receive official certificates recognised by the HPRA, qualifying you to apply for authorisation to work with animals in research.
