Complete HPRA-recognised training through our Core and Species-Specific Modules to meet national and EU legal requirements for ethical animal research.
To legally work with animals in scientific research in Ireland, individuals must complete formal training recognised by the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) and aligned with EU Directive 2010/63/EU.
LAST Ireland delivers that training through a two-stage certification pathway:
Upon successful completion, participants receive accredited certificates recognised by regulatory bodies, qualifying them to apply for Individual Authorisation to carry out procedures involving research animals.
Certification through LAST Ireland is more than a legal requirement, it’s a commitment to doing things right.
Our training satisfies all formal prerequisites for animal procedure authorisation under Irish law.
Based on EU Directive 2010/63/EU and widely accepted across research institutions.
Certified individuals demonstrate competency in humane handling, ethical decision-making, and scientifically valid methods, all grounded in the 3Rs: Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement.
LAST Ireland certification is trusted by leading universities, biotech firms, CROs, and public research bodies.
To legally work with animals in scientific procedures in Ireland, individuals must complete accredited training that meets both national and EU requirements. LAST Ireland provides that pathway, structured around three core stages.
This training is recognised by the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) and satisfies the formal education required under EU Directive 2010/63/EU for applying for Individual Authorisation.
Start with a live cohort course covering animal welfare science, the 3Rs, legal responsibilities, and humane practices. Completion is required before advancing.
After the Core, learners complete a self-paced online module focused on the species they will work with. Choose from Rodent, Aquatic, Dog & Cat, and more. Each module includes practical species biology, care, handling, welfare indicators, and relevant procedures.
Once both modules are complete and you’ve passed the examination to a qualifying grade:
We understand that navigating animal research certification can be complex, especially if you’re new to the field or trained outside Ireland. Our FAQs cover the most common queries, but if you need personalised advice, we're always happy to help.
In the EU the use of animal in a research framework is regulated by EU Directive 2010/63. This has been incorporated into Irish law by SI 534/14 . To perform a procedure on an animal, in a research environment, which causes pain or distress ” greater than that caused by the insertion of needle , in accordanc with best veterinary practice” must be autourised . In the case of Ireland this is done by the competent authourity (HPRA). To optain this individua;l authorisation mandatory training is required.
It is advised that the core modules course is done first. Elements of the basic principles are incorporated into the assestment of the species specific exams.
The species are grouped into some general areas. eg Large animal which includes farm animals and rodents which includes mice and rats. It is best to seek advice as to the most appropiate grouping which suits your proposed work.r
An certificate will be issued on successful completion of an exam. Certificates are normally issued after completion of the core modules and a species specific exam.
If you have previous training issues from another member state you will need to provide this to the HPRA
Any training before 2013 which does not incorporate the principles of Directive 2010/63 will need to be repeated.
Whether you're starting out in research or formalising your qualifications, LAST Ireland provides the training pathway you need to work legally, ethically, and confidently.
