Shaping the Future of Ethical Animal Research in Ireland
LAST Ireland is Ireland’s leading education programme supporting the scientific use of animals in research and testing.
Our mission is to ensure that anyone working with animals in science is not only legally certified but also ethically equipped to protect animal welfare at the highest standards.
We deliver accredited training, expert consultancy, and veterinary oversight to students, researchers, universities, and corporate institutions across Ireland, helping them meet legal obligations while cultivating a culture of compassion and compliance.
At the heart of LAST Ireland’s approach is the internationally recognised Three Rs principle. All of our training, from Core Modules to specialised consultancy is designed to embed the 3Rs in every learner’s mindset and practice.
Use non-animal alternatives wherever scientifically possible. We teach participants how to critically evaluate the necessity of animal use, and encourage the adoption of validated alternative models such as in vitro systems, computer simulations, and organ-on-chip technologies.
Minimise the number of animals used without compromising scientific integrity. LAST Ireland promotes good experimental design, appropriate statistical planning, and collaborative sharing of data, all of which help reduce duplication and unnecessary use of animals.
Improve animal care, procedures, and environments to reduce pain, stress, and suffering. From proper handling and housing to modern anaesthesia and surgical technique, our training ensures personnel act with compassion, competence, and continuous awareness of each animal’s well-being.
While the 3Rs are enshrined in Irish and EU law, at LAST Ireland we see them as more than regulatory requirements, they are an ethical responsibility and a professional standard.
We believe that when researchers are well-trained, animals are better cared for, and science becomes more humane, reliable, and respected.
We also recognise that animal research is a deeply sensitive area. That’s why we openly support:
Our goal is to produce not just compliant professionals, but ethical leaders in animal research.
